In our Writing Workshop class we were given an assignment to write a letter as Matthew Wood, a strict and stern puritan man from the book, The Witch of Blackbird Pond. In this letter we took the position of Matthew writing to his friend about his niece, Kit Tyler, a very loose and free girl from the island of Barbados, whom he just received a portrait of, and who is going to go live with him and his family. We thought of what a puritan might think of someone so wild and free, and in this letter we criticized Kit, who is so very un-puritan-like.

Dear Friend,
I just received a portrait of my niece, Katherine Tyler, who is coming to live with me and my family. Her hair is loose and unkempt and the ribbons on her bonnet are loose and flying in the wind. Her dress and shoes are impractical and her sleeves are above her elbows! How is she supposed to work in such frippery! Haven’t her parents ever given her work to do!? I am simply disgusted. Kit looks careless, arrogant, and absurd. If she lives in this household, she must learn to live the puritan lifestyle. I do not approve of this child.
Best Wishes,
Matthew Wood
